Gifts for the Home Cook Who Loves Flavor 😋

Okay, let’s be real. EVERYONE loves flavor, no one likes bland food. These gifts will go over well with pretty much any home cook!

Brightland olive oil gift set

The Mini Artist Series from Brightland - 4 infused olive oils for $85 USD

For herbs and spices, pay attention and get them something that will compliment what they make. Or, if they’ve expressed interest in trying a new type of cuisine but don’t have the right spices on hand, you can help them get started!

🎁 Shop Local: Check out your local farmer’s market to see what they have!

Gifts for the Home Cook Who Loves to Bake 🍪

  • Vanilla beans or paste. Why? It’s better than vanilla extract! We get our vanilla beans from The Silk Road, and sometimes you can find vanilla bean paste at Costco.

  • High quality chocolate. We love Valrhona chocolate! We personally love the Manjari 64% (it’s great in cookies!) and the cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor. They also have chocolate gift boxes! (Need it fast? Their products are also on Amazon.)

  • Earl gray tea. Yes, tea. Hear us out! Our friend Tim makes the best earl gray shortbread cookies every year. Tea is a fun ingredient to bake with! Choose a high quality tea like this one from Murchie’s.

🎁 Shop Local: Check out a high-end bakery in your area! We’re lucky to live by Duchess Bakeshop, and they sell a variety of provisions. Yours likely does too!

Valrhona Premium Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder - $21 USD

Have mad stacks to spend? Get them a KitchenAid mixer is they don’t have one already!

Since they come in a variety of colors, make sure you get the right color to match their kitchen! If they already have a KitchenAid mixer, you could buy them an attachment they don’t have instead. 💡

KitchenAid Artisan Series Mixer - $499 USD

Gifts for the Home Cook Who Loves Heat 🌶️

Some people like it hot. Really hot. Here are some ideas for the spice lord in your life:

Season 28 Hot Ones Trio Pack - $57 USD

Gifts for the Home Cook Whose Snackish 😋

Who doesn’t love snacks?

  • Meats and cheeses. Hickory Farms has a great assortment of Christmas gift baskets that can be easily turned into a delicious charcuterie board.

  • Chocolate. We personally love Delavoye Chocolate (a local chocolate maker where we live). We also can vouch for Venchi (had their chocolate while in Italy, it’s divine!)

  • Salty snacks. Check out HBAF, they’re a Korean brand that makes a TON of different flavors of almonds. Some are weird, some are normal. They’re fun to try. Oh, and if you’re in Canada, get them some Zwick’s Preztel sticks.

🎁 Shop Local: Go shopping in your area and build your own gift basket with treats you think your giftee will love!

Give Back Box - $60.49 USD (includes $5 donation to No Kid Hungry with purchase)

Gifts for the Home Cook Who Loves To Read 📚

Not every home cook likes cookbooks. If they don’t have a few already, chances are they might not appreciate receiving one as a gift. Some people prefer to use the internet to source recipes, or just like to wing-it in the kitchen.

If they love to pour over cookbooks and sticky note recipes, or simply just love to collect them (like we do) here are a few to consider — just make sure they don’t own it first!

Cooking-Focused Books

Baking-Focused Books

Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat

Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat - $40 USD

🎁 Shop Local: We’ve linked to these books on Amazon, but if you have a local bookstore check them out!

Gifts for the Home Cook Who Likes to Drink 🍸

If your home cook in your life just so happens to also love cocktails, check out Cocktail Emporium — they have everything from bitters to syrups to glassware to gift sets.

Cucumber Gin & Tonic Set - $80 CAD

If they like wine and you know what kind they like (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, etc) buy them a bottle of the type they enjoy. Chances are they’ll enjoy it, unless they’re a huge wine snob. 🍷 (If that’s the case, pay close attention to what they buy.)

If they’re into whiskey, we recommend Jameson Triple Triple for a budget option. We don’t have a recommendation for a whiskey option (we’re not whiskey snobs), but if you travel internationally a great gift is getting whiskey (or any alcohol) while you’re abroad!

🎁 Shop Local: Where we live we’re blessed with Sherbrooke Liquor — it has a ton of products that you won’t find at your average chain liquor store. If there is something like that where you live, check them out! Another way to support local is to shop directly from the smaller wineries in your country. Since we’re in Western Canada, we try to support the wineries in the Okanagan as much as we can.

Gifts for the Eco-Conscious Home Cook 🌱

There are a lot of different ways you can reduce waste in the kitchen. Here are some of our favorite gifts for the eco-friendly cook in your life:

Two Swedish washcloths - $12-14 USD (varies by design)

Gifts for the Home Cook Who Loves Efficiency 🥘

Slow cooking is a great way to make a large quantity of food that requires minimal effort. If the cook in your life is into meal prep and uses a slow cooker, consider upgrading them to an Instant Pot. It has all the same features as a crock pot, but is also a pressure cooker! The possibilities are endless with an Instant Pot — it can boil eggs, make yogurt, cook rice, roast chicken, and so much more.

We love to make homemade broth in our Instant Pot. It takes way less time!

Instant Pot Duo 3-Quart Pressure Cooker - $109 USD

Gifts for the Home Cook Who Wants a Break 😮‍💨

Cooking is fun! But meal planning, creating a grocery list, and shopping can be exhausting. It’s nice to get a break and have someone do the thinking for you!

Give the gift of easy week-day meals by buying them a subscription to a meal kit subscription such as Goodfood or Freshprep (for Canadians only).

🎁 Shop Local: Don’t want to buy them a meal kit subscription? Buy a gift card for their favorite restaurant!

Gifts for the Home Cook Who Loves to Garden 🌿

If you’re like us and live somewhere where it gets cold in the winter (we mean below freezing 🥶), then they’ll probably miss having the fresh herbs and produce that are grown in the summer. The AeroGarden is perfect for home cooks who love using fresh herbs —they can grow them indoors year-round!

AeroGarden Harvest Elite - $119 USD

Need More Ideas? 🤔 We’ve got you!

Help Keep Their Knives Sharp

When is the last time they’ve sharpened their knives? You can take their knives to a professional to have them sharpened, or buy them a Tumbler knife sharpener so they can easily keep their knives sharp. Check out our Tumbler review.

Tumbler is easier than a whetstone, but if you think they’d prefer a whetstone instead check out our guide!

Tumbler knife sharpener

Tumbler Diamond Rolling Knife Set - $129 USD

Upgrade Their Warped Plastic Cutting Board

A good cutting board is worth its weight in gold. Boos Boards are more or less the industry standard. They also happen to be a bit pricey, however, when treated with care (and periodically oiled) a good quality board will last for years. Gift one with the care set (oil and board cream) so they can keep their board in tip-top shape.

Boos Block Cutting Board

Boos Block Cutting Board - $60-200 USD (depends on the size and style)

Prevent Freezer Burn With a Vacuum Sealer

Do they like to buy meat in bulk and freeze it? Do they frequently shop at Costco? If they’re using crappy Ziploc bags and don't eat the food fast enough, they likely freezer burn a lot of their food.

A vacuum sealer solves this problem by allowing you to properly pack and store food so that it retains its quality for much longer. It’s something that a lot of home cooks want — they just tend to buy the shinier items first (like the knife they really want).

We personally use this FoodSaver vacuum sealer at home. (It’s also great for sous vide!)

vacuum sealer

FoodSaver Vacuum Sealer - $146 USD

Help Them Perfectly Cook Meat, Every Time

We can’t remember what life was like before we got a Thermapen. It was terrible. Chicken was tough. Steak was overdone. Pork was dry. Dark times! 😱

Then we got a Thermapen. Our life changed. We cooked our steaks perfectly medium-rare every time, we stopped cutting into chicken to check, and we ascended to a higher plane of culinary existence.

If they don’t have one of these yet, they need one.

ThermoWorks Thermapen - $119 USD

Protect Their Clothes With an Apron

Not all aprons are made equal. There’s a very fine line between fun and joke-y and super tacky. For example, don’t ever give someone this abomination as a gift:

terrible apron

Obviously you’ll know the person better than we will, but if you’re going to go to the trouble of buying an apron as a gift, we suggest picking one from this list. The options are utilitarian while also good looking. We personally like the look of these Hedley & Bennett aprons! 😍

Floral Smock - $129 USD

Give Them a Dutch Oven They’ll Love 😉

Much like a cutting board, a good quality Dutch oven can last for years. Le Creuset and Staub are the big names here and in our experience are worth the money.

We can confidently say that any foodie who doesn’t have one would love to have one — just be sure to get them a color they’ll love! (Look at what colors they decorate their kitchen with, as they may want to display it on their oven.)

Le Creuset Round French Oven

Le Creuset Round French Oven - $200-$795 USD

Impress Them With a Sous Vide

There are a wide variety of choices for sous vide cooker, from super pricey self contained units, to robot sticks that have varying levels of features.

Sous vide offers the promise of never overcooking anything ever again. If you really are trying to impress the foodie in your life, consider gifting them a sous vide (plus, check out our sous vide guide for beginners!)

We have and love the Anova Culinary Sous Vide Precision Cooker.

Anova Sous Vide - $139 USD

Give Them the Joy of a Sharp, Shiny Knife

If they don’t have any fancy knives yet, you can’t go wrong with a chef’s knife or santoku knife, as they’ll likely use it every day. 🔪

If they already have a knife collection started, talk to them about what kind of knife they’re missing from their arsenal, as well as what material (carbon steel, stainless steel, or a hybrid) they prefer.

🎁 Shop Local: Does your town have a knife store? GO THERE. The staff there are knowledgeable and will guide you in the right direction.

Masakage Kiri VG-10 Santoku 165mm knife

Masakage Kiri VG-10 Santoku 165mm - $426 CAD

🚫 Things NOT To Gift The Home Chef In Your Life 🚫

Below are a few things we recommend gifting with caution or just not gifting at all.

One Use Gadgets

Your home chef likely doesn’t need or want an avocado slicer, pizza scissors, cherry pitter, banana slicer, egg cracker, or {insert specific produce here} peeler. There are a million gadgets that only do one thing that are a waste of space and are just unnecessary. Most of these “innovations” can be replaced by one simple tool: a knife. A regular knife. The same knife they already use for literally everything.

Don’t do it, unless they specifically ask for one.

Also, if it was “As Seen on TV”, don’t get it. Sorry, Slap Chop.

Dishware & Cookware

There are a number of reasons why gifting dishware and cookware (pots, pans, etc) is not a great idea. For dishes, it might not be the style that they want. For cookware, while a pot or pan set may look nice, it may have some unfortunate design quirks that make them not ideal — it might have trash handles or it might not be oven safe.

If you were thinking of gifting dishware or cookware, just ask them first. Chances are, they’ve already spent hours researching “the best non-toxic skillet that doesn’t warp, scratch, or emotionally disappoint me.”

Kitchen Towels

Most people are drowning in kitchen towels. Or at least, we are. And the ones with cutesy sayings on them? Ick. Maybe this is a just-us preference, but think twice before you get the chef in your life some kitchen towels.

We hope this list helps you shop for the home cook in your life! Let us know in the comments below if we missed anything on our list that we should have included.
